Tool Repair
Hit a bone, a bottle cap, or a glass cutting board, and your knife can end up with a chip in the edge. A chipped knife catches and skips instead of slicing clean. Edge chip repair in Portland fixes that. We grind out the chip by hand and rebuild a clean, even edge, so the knife cuts like it should again.
A chip is more than a dull spot. The steel is actually missing, so a normal sharpening will not close it. We grind the edge down past the chip, then set a fresh bevel along the whole blade. The knife loses a tiny bit of height, but you get back a smooth, sharp edge with no gaps. We work by hand so we never overheat the steel. Glass and stone cutting boards are the most common cause we see, so a softer wood or plastic board helps your edge last.
Edge chip repair starts at $5 and runs up to about $20, based on how deep the chip is and how much steel we remove. A small nick is quick. A deep chip takes more work. We look at the knife first and give you a price before we start. If the tip is broken instead of the edge, see our knife and tool tip repair.
Almost always. Unless the blade is cracked all the way through, we can grind out the chip and rebuild the edge.
A little. We remove just enough steel to clear the chip, so the blade loses a small amount of height but keeps its shape.
